Severance Pay/termination pay

JoAnne Peterson (Calgary)

I was employed for 23 years before legal takeover of TPFA housing group by GofA, leading to layoff of 38 staff. The employer gave 8 weeks notice of layoff to staff, effective 3/31/25, saying they do not owe anyone severance pay?The last year of employment CUPE 4731 was in place. Although some of us didn’t want to be unionized, majority rules. Is there any way to fight for severance pay or are we all out of luck? 23 years and being forced to leave a job you love, with no severance pay seems wrong.
