Power of attorney

Penny Zeeb (Airdrie)

My son has power of attorney for my mother. He refuses to let me see my mother or even tell me where she is housed. She has dementia. Is there anything I can do to be able to see my mother?

Hi Penny,

I appreciate how difficult this situation is for you. There may be something you can do to see your mother, but it will depend on the facts of the situation. I would recommend you invest in a consultation with a lawyer to discuss the specific details of your case in a confidential setting to get a sense of your options.

In general, though, I can tell you that a Power of Attorney only gives authority over financial matters, not personal matters like who one can associate with, personal care, or where they live. There are also resources to address elder abuse, as some of the things you mention may be elements of this type of abuse (financial control, isolating from friends and family). A call to 211 may point you in the right direction for resources in your area.
