Need Legal Advice Please

J (Canada )

Hi, I am searching for legal advice on whether or not to go to the police or pursue legal action against my brother in law. A brief explanation about what happened is that he admitted to taking my husband’s cellphone without my husband’s knowledge or permission and downloaded nude photographs of myself and a few of my husband onto his computer without our knowledge or permission. Claiming to me that he had lustful feelings towards me but then told my husband a different story claiming that it was for blackmail purposes. My husband did attempt to slap him across the face when he confronted him out of anger, so that’s another worry I have about whether we should bother going to the police or not. We are seeking advice and help to figure out what our next steps should be or if we should even pursue legal action or sue, I’m really unsure and really upset over this and just looking for advice. We are low income so unfortunately can’t afford much but just at least looking for legal advice and if it’s worth even pursuing legal action. I also have the screenshots on my phone of him admitting to what he has done as well. This has caused great stress on myself as I have attempted to take my own life and been in hospital and now seeking therapy and treatment because of the stress and pain it has caused on my mental health. He shows no signs of remorse or has even attempted an apology and thinks things will get better “over time” since it’s now “in the past” as he put it. As I stated earlier we are low income and can’t afford much and I’m unsure how to proceed. Any advice is welcomed. Thank you.
